Let’s Talk About Scent

Brenna_Phelan_LargeFile

I’m lucky enough to say that I love what I do and find ways to talk about it every chance I get. This weekend I attended a friend’s baby shower, and within half an hour the women at my table were chatting about their olfactory preferences and most recent fragrance purchases, rather than baby bibs and car seats.

The conversation developed rather organically. Everyone was commenting on how beautiful the room looked and how amazing it smelled. Naturally, I hunted for the source of the scent and located the single candle in the corner of the room. I proceeded to tell my tablemates how well candles are doing in the market. Of course I didn’t get into the details of the segment’s 25 percent growth, or that Internet sales are growing at a faster rate than brick and mortar*. I did, however, tell them all about the brand, the company’s story, and at what retailers these particular candles may be purchased.

Red Carpet Recap, Part 5: The Invisible Accessory

Brenna_Phelan_LargeFile

The awards season is officially over and I, like many people, sat glued to my TV from the very beginning of red carpet coverage until the final award was handed out. The comedic hosts were part of the draw, but the main reason I watched was for the fashion.

As stars made their way towards the theater, they were each asked the obligatory question, “Who are you wearing?” By that the interviewer meant, who designed your gown, your shoes, your handbag, your jewelry. Sometimes there were even comments about the celebrity’s hair, makeup, or skin. What was missing from the commentary? Fragrance. The invisible accessory that can add elegance to any gown or tux was not mentioned at all.

The Fragrance Bowl

Brenna_Phelan_LargeFile

In honor of Super Bowl XLIX, I thought I’d write about what’s really on everyone’s mind. No, not deflated balls or the pulling of controversial ads; I’m going to write about who’s going to win. I won’t use a crystal ball or puppies to predict the winner; instead, I’ll base the outcome of this year’s Super Bowl on prestige fragrance sales in the respective cities.

Movember, Part 3: A Generation, and a Fragrance Gift to Match

Brenna_Phelan_LargeFile

Every year, during the month of November, men forgo their razors in an effort to raise awareness of, and money for, men’s health projects. Moustaches can be seen everywhere you look, and social media is full of #Movember, matching the age group talking more about the charitable facial hair movement than any other, 25-34 year olds.

Falling in Love with Fragrance

Brenna_Phelan_LargeFile

Last month, I was on vacation in the happiest place on earth, and was reminded of the moment I fell in love…with fragrance. Yes, I found the first fragrance I truly loved in Disney World, Epcot’s World Pavilion, to be specific. Prior to finding this scent, I had worn perfume but was more of a light user, spraying on fragrance a few times a month. I had no real affinity for scent, because I hadn’t found one that really felt like it was right for me.

Back-to-School Scent

Brenna_Phelan_LargeFile

It feels like summer just started, but it’s already time for back-to-school shopping. Everywhere you look there are reminders to shop for notebooks, sneakers, jeans, and lunch snacks. But where are the reminders to pick up a new scent for school? Doesn’t every high school teen want to make a statement on their first day? Don’t they want to set the tone for the new school year? Why doesn’t that include smelling awesome?

Filling the Fine Fragrance Void

While fragrance itself is intriguing to consumers, the power of scent on their purchasing behavior is also telling. This is a topic I heard a great deal about at a recent industry event. To give the abridged version, studies have shown that consumers prefer stores that have ambient scent and are often willing to spend more on the same merchandise than when they are in an environment with no scent. In other words, if they “scent it,” they will buy. What really struck me was that people do seem to like fragrance, and even prefer it over being fragrance-free, but that interest doesn’t seem to translate to fine fragrance, or fragrance juices. Why the disconnect?

Seasonal Fashion Scents Make Good Sense

They say April showers bring May flowers. In my house, April showers also bring an opportunity to change my closet for the season. Those rainy spring days are perfect for packing up the woolen clothes and rediscovering the warm weather fashion that’s been hibernating in my attic. Sherpa-lined boots are replaced with strappy sandals, and tank tops take the place of turtlenecks. For me, this seasonal fashion switch is not limited to apparel; it also includes a change to my choice of fragrances. With spring’s return I bid adieu to those scents that are a bit heavier in favor of lighter, brighter ones with citrus or floral notes.

New York/Miami State of Mind

Sigh… it’s another snowy day in New York. I know I’m not alone when I say I’ve had enough. I’m leaving; I’m going somewhere, anywhere it isn’t snowing. Miami is looking particularly good right now. While its 30-degrees in New York, with almost a foot of snow on the ground (and more coming), Miami is expecting a high of 82-degrees, with some clouds and a 20% chance of rain. That sounds great to me! Sadly, I cannot go to Miami today. What I can do is obsess over it and research every aspect of the Floridian paradise, starting with facts about my passion: fragrance.

Fragrance Gifting, It’s My Thing

Last night, I set up my living room with wrapping paper, tape, scissors, and ribbon, turned on some Christmas music, and prepared to wrap my holiday presents. I noticed a definite theme in my gift giving this year – lots of fragrance! Perfume for my daughter, cologne for my boyfriend, perfume for my boyfriend’s niece, gift sets for all three of my male cousins, and scented body sets for all four of my female cousins.

Bye, Bye…Buy!

It was a perfect sunny 75-degree kind of day when I was wandering around Manhattan with a few friends. We stopped into a store to smell the newest launch from a beloved fragrance house. Then, in an instant, my day turned from blissful to dismal when the beauty advisor informed me that one of my favorite scents, my go-to scent, was being retired this year. Retired? How can this be? Don’t they know how much I love it, how much I need it? Sacré bleu!

Falling Into New

The end of summer brings mixed emotions with the cooler weather and the sun setting earlier. As I pack up my sandals and sundresses to make room for my boots and jackets I feel sad. But on the other hand, I look forward to the changes that autumn brings with the new fashions. And as the new fall styles arrive, the highly anticipated fragrance launches follow.

Fragrance Fumble?

It’s finally here! Football season has arrived and I couldn’t be more excited. Anyone who knows me knows that this is my favorite time of year. I love spending my Sundays watching the games (and watching my computer to monitor my fantasy team) all day long. I actually get pretty annoyed when we have plans on a Sunday that tear me away from my beloved sport.

Why Not?

This year, less than 64 percent of men reported that they use fragrance and only 23 percent report wearing it on an everyday, or nearly every day basis.*  That leaves a whole lot of men out there who walk around incomplete, partially put together, and quite frankly – naked.  Thirty-six percent of men don’t wear fragrance. I have to ask – why not?

Rock ‘N’ Roll ‘N’ Perfume

My daughter and her friends go to a lot of concerts, at least one a month.  She went to a concert this past week, for a music group that I am not at all familiar with, and came home with some interesting free stuff.  They handed out fun size Mike and Ike candies as well as samples of a women’s fragrance.  I had never heard of such a giveaway at a music concert before.  It’s rather ingenious though, as the target audience for the concert and the scent seem fairly in line.

You Had Me At Exclusive

I went to a department store the other day and I fell in love with a fragrance I had never smelled before. The sales associate told me that it was an exclusive brand for the store which piqued my interest because it was unique. That comment also created a sense of urgency because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get it anywhere else (well played Mr. Sales Associate). While the exclusivity tactic certainly worked for me does it work for your average shopper?

One Direction Obsession

My 15 year old cousin, Maeve, is obsessed with One Direction, which is clear from the posters of the British boy band lining her bedroom walls and ceiling!  Last time I spoke to Maeve she asked me if I wanted to hear all of her “ship names” (“ship” as in “relationship”).  You know….Maeve + Niall= Miall or Naeve….that’s apparently a “ship name”. Most of us would be embarrassed if we were outed the way I am outing my cousin but I bet if she reads this she will be excited just to see her ship name on the Internet.

Go Big Or Go Home

This weekend I went shopping for two Father’s Day gifts.  The first gift was for my father, who set the bar so high that my sister and I have had a hard time finding men who measure up.  This one is tricky, since his only requirements are a cold Big Gulp and good weather to play golf. The other gift was for my boyfriend, who is a devoted father to his own daughter and an incredible father figure for mine. He is the one man who does measure up, and is easier to shop for since he is as much of a scent-aholic as I. If there’s one thing I know how to shop for, it’s fragrance.

Rollerballs For My Roller Bag

I’m all set for my long weekend in the Caribbean and ready to pack everything I need into my 21” carry-on.  Sundresses, check.  Bathing suits, check.  Shampoo, toothpaste, suntan lotion, check, check, check.   Perfume?  I can’t very well go away without bringing some kind of fragrance with me.  I won’t need it for day time when I’ll likely be at the beach, but certainly I’ll need a spritz or two when I’m dressed up at night.  Problem – I don’t want to risk my beautiful glass bottles getting damaged in the flight, even if they could pass the 3-1-1 TSA rule.  Solution – Rollerballs!

The Power Of Mom…And Grandma

As Mother’s Day approaches, like many people, I think about how lucky I am to be a mother, and to have a wonderful mother of my own. I also think about my grandmother, who passed away several years ago but remains a constant presence in my life. She taught me big life lessons like the importance of being well mannered, well read, and well spoken, as well as smaller ones like the benefits of ironing, doing your hair, and wearing perfume every day. Okay, I don’t do my hair EVERY day, but ironing and applying fragrance are part of my daily routine.
