A Point of View on Connected Camcorders

Apart from the Eye-Fi card, and a few forays over the years from the likes of Kodak, Sony — and more recently Samsung — digital cameras have proven resistant to connectivity. Most have shunned Wi-Fi and cellular radios despite smartphone-based sharing providing increasingly tough competition. Digital camcorders have clung even more closely to their islands. Rumors abounded that the plug was pulled on Flip, just before it debuted its first Wi-Fi-enabled products. Big Flip Flops to Fill

Last week, my colleague Steve Baker wrote about the poor decision on Cisco’s part in shuttering Flip and the difficulties faced in appeasing Wall Street in the volatile tech market. Today the competition marches ahead without Flip in the mix, and nearly one quarter of the camcorder market is there for the taking.

The Tyranny of the Street

Today’s news that Cisco will shutter Flip Video is a bad decision on so many levels that it is difficult to fit them all into one discussion. But for the sake of this blog, let’s focus on two. When Cisco first purchased Flip, many analysts, including me, questioned whether the buy was a good fit. But abandoning it now seems a cowardly act, and one that flies in the face of common sense.

Die Hard

Since 2005, Apple has held an event each September that has provided an update on the iPod ecosystem. Most of the rumors around the possibilities of such an event this year have been focused on an Apple tablet device. However, a secondary rumor has speculated that this year might mark the end of the line for the iPod classic, the most direct descendant of the original hard drive-based 5 GB iPod.
