Ross Rubin
Executive Director and Principal Analyst, Connected Intelligence

Ross Rubin NPDRoss Rubin is executive director and principal analyst of The NPD Group’s Connected Intelligence (CI), an advisory service that helps clients capitalize on the confluence of devices, access, and content in the era of the connected consumer. Ross has played a central role in developing CI, defining the its scope and qualitative research deliverables and driving the research agenda for its cross-industry Inflection Reports.

As CI’s device research director, Ross helps clients develop strategies to anticipate disruptive changes in the consumer technology market. These may be driven by blurring category boundaries due to the rise of convergent devices (smartphones, tablets, game consoles, PCs, and televisions), shifting usage models, broadband connectivity, rival ecosystems, and vertical integration of software and services.

Ross also serves as the industry analyst for The NPD Group’s Telecom group, which tracks sell-through of wireless handsets and accessories. He previously served as NPD’s lead consumer electronics industry analyst, covering marketplace trends for products such as televisions, portable media players, Blu-ray players, camcorders, and in-vehicle electronics.

As one of the most frequently-quoted industry analysts covering consumer devices, Ross regularly provides interviews to major TV and print media organizations, including ABC News, Bloomberg Television, CNET, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News and MSNBC. CNN has called him “a top adviser to the leading technology companies.” He has moderated numerous panels at CES over the past decade, and he has spoken at other major industry events, such as CTIA and IFA. In 2010, he was a keynote speaker at Think Mobile. In 2011, he served as conference chair for Clean Slate, the first conference devoted to tablets’ impact on the media industry.

A longtime observer of industry trends, he has written or contributed to 11 books and more than 500 articles on consumer technology and communications. He writes columns for ABCNews.com, CNET, Engadget, and Tecca and posts regularly to both the NPD blog (http://npdgroupblog.com) and his own blog, Out of the Box (http://rossrubin.com/outofthebox). Prior to joining The NPD Group in 2004, Ross was a vice president and chief research fellow at Jupiter Media Metrix, where he founded and managed research services focusing on PCs and peripherals, smart electronics, wireless, broadband, and video games. Previously, he was an IT analyst at Salomon Brothers and McKinsey & Company.

Ross has a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
