The highly anticipated video game industry sales results for September have now been delivered, and many who were expecting a bigger increase over last year’s results, were underwhelmed by the numbers. The industry did return to positive territory after six consecutive months of posting declines, but the increase was a modest 1 percent.

Windows 7 Launch Starts Here!

As Windows 7 begins its assault on the consumer retail marketplace today, so far, despite a few questionable decisions, the marketing, merchandising, and retail preparation appear to be clicking on all cylinders.  Since I’m not a product reviewer I can’t comment on how “insanely great” Windows 7 might be, but I can give Microsoft kudos for the preparation and first spate of advertising.  Let’s look at 3 buckets.

Sizing Up TV Innovation

As flat-panel technologies made TVs thin enough to tempt Jenny Craig into becoming a CE retailer, consumers found that they could not only put them in places that had been impractical before (such as on walls), but also fit more TV into less space. This was further facilitated by the relatively light weight of large flat-panel TVs, which made them easier to transport home from the store or ship from an online retailer. Indeed, according to NPD’s recent 2009 TV Inventory Study, nearly one-in-five televisions that consumers own is 40″ or larger.
