SanDisk deals a card to wireless carriers

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week, SanDisk revealed its Service Delivery Card (SDC) initiative, following its recent moves to put DRM-free albums and DRM-laden virtual radio stations on microSD cards. In contrast, though, its latest loaded microSD is programmed in partnership with, and for use by, mobile network operators. SDCs are bundled with microSD-equipped handsets and could offer a range of content, including large applications that could springboard the use of application marketplaces that nearly every major smartphone backer now seems committed to rolling out.

Why Microsoft needs stores

Yesterday’s surprise announcement that Microsoft hired a retailing professional to help create and manage a chain of Microsoft-focused stores probably isn’t such a surprise. A number of recent activities in Redmond, from the opening of the Windows Experience store to the placement of Windows Gurus within U.S. retail stores, and even the Windows Velocity program’s, PCs tuned by Microsoft, were signposts on a road to more consumer-level engagement.

The Day The Music Died – Again

Though they hope to one day exit Chapter 11 protection, we can add Muzak to the growing cemetery of iconic music industry names — like Tower Records, Sam Goody, and Chrysalis Records (for you Tull and Blondie fans) — that have faltered of late. In case you’ve never left your cubicle, Muzak is widely credited with inventing constantly humming, non-offending “elevator music” one often hears in stores, office and store hoists, and dentists’ offices.
